LUNCHTIME OF THE GODS
EPISODE 1 – AN IMPOLITE AWAKENING

(The master bedroom of a house in an upper middle-class neighborhood is dark, except for a probable night-light outside the view of the camera, providing just enough illumination to see a non-descript man and woman, in their mid to late 30’s, sleeping in a king-sized bed. One of them is snoring, but not at an odious or remarkable volume. A window above the head of their bed is covered with a curtain that is thin enough to reveal that it is very dark outside. On the nightstand beside the woman, the glowing red numbers of a digital alarm clock change from 6:59 to 7:00.)

ALARM CLOCK: Beep, beep, beep!

(The woman groans, wakes up, moves slowly to turn off the alarm.)

MAN: Why did you set the alarm for the middle of the night?

WOMAN: It says 7 o’clock.

MAN: It’s still dark outside.

(The woman turns on the lamp on her nightstand, picks up her gold watch and looks at it.)

WOMAN: It’s 7 o’clock. That’s the time my watch says too.

MAN: It’s never this dark at 7:00 a.m.

WOMAN: Maybe it’s cloudy.

WOMAN: I’ve never seen the stars this bright.

MAN: (Exasperated and a little frightened.) Where’s the gosh-durned sun?

(The man and woman are now outside on the street, looking at the sky. Many of their neighbors in this upscale suburban community are also outside their homes wondering the same thing. Various voices in the distance can be heard, saying things like “Oh, my God!” “What’s happening?” “Where’s the sun?” “I can’t believe it.” At least a couple of women can be heard sobbing.)

(The man and woman are now in their living room. Another man and woman, most likely their next door neighbors, have joined them. They are all wearing heavy coats and sitting silently in front of a TV set.)

ANNOUNCER:
This morning, we have witnessed an unprecedented event. At 6:47 a.m., Northern Standard Time, the sun disappeared. President Hernandez has declared a state of martial law, and has called an emergency meeting of Parliament for 10:00 a.m.
(Pause.)
Things do not look good.
